GPS | Glitch Project Space is the personal art-initiative of visual artist Mitchel Breed. As such he has organized GPS-Projects like Ship of Fools, An Architecture of Encounters and An Act of Becoming, around the themes of Madness, The Pressure to Perform and the dual theme of Embeddedness and Displacement. These projects took place between 2014 and 2021, as big collaborative collages with artistic contributions from peers - You'll find the documentation of these projects on this website.
Mitchel Breed: Over time my artistic practice has shifted from a studio based practice as a painter, to working collaboratively from the basis of art-initiatives like Das Spectrum (2011-2018), Stichting Das Spectrum (2020-present) and Glitch Project Space (2014-present). I started out exploring themes through drawing, painting, collage and making zines, which then grew into ideas for collaborative exhibitions for which I started applying for funding. This resulted in collage-like-installations, in which I combined my own works with contributions from other artists. - Resulting in contextually embedded installations and exhibitions through which I research specific questions and themes.*
Looking for connection and dialogue with other artists/peers became a major part of my artistic practice, which I'm currently developing as a peer support practice in relation to mental health. As a peer support facilitator I'm developing art-based peer support workshops, seminars and working groups. By sharing my personal mental health journey, experiences and insights around mental sensitivity, trauma and recovery, I'm aiming to support others in their recovery processes. - I consider peer support as a new medium in my artistic practice and research, exploring the theme of mental sensitivity in connection with peers.**
* Ship of Fools II (Reflections on Madness), 2022 is a current example of this, which I developed for the art-route CareFull, at Enik Recovery College.
** Mitchel Breed: "Peer support zie ik als een nieuw medium om mee te werken" - Interview K.F. Hein Fonds - Marjolein Sponselee, Februari 2023.
